My Chumby One arrived today - for those of you who haven't heard of the gadget, it's an all-in-one alarm clock / radio / digital photo frame / mp3 player / yadda yadda yadda and it's got wifi so it can do internet radio.
It's also an open platform and people have written hundreds of "widgets" for it to do anything from play tic-tac-toe to show stock reports and weather forecasts.
Despite the name, this is the Chumby company's second iteration of the hardware - the first was covered in squishy upholstery, making it look a bit like a football that had swallowed an iPhone. I've got the second revision, which is more like a tiny white toaster. It's way smaller than expected - I had envisioned something the size of a stack of CD cases, but it's closer to a stack of playing cards (maybe 1/2" larger in each direction).
My current clock is also a combo alarm clock / radio / photo frame / mp3 player, but it's not hackable in the least and the interface sucks and the internal speaker blew up so I had to rewire it to drive an external speaker.
I'm looking forward to setting up the Chumby and maybe writing a widget for it (I really want a "solve these math equations to turn off the alarm clock" setting), and I'll probably see how much of the old clock I can salvage / reverse engineer.
